About School Camps@Kopinga Marae

Are your students tired of the same old school camp? Perhaps you are too?

School Camps at Kopinga Marae was developed after many discussions about the many ways in which Te Imi Moriori could show off their culture, history and heritage to the wider New Zealand community and the world. The cornerstone of Moriori philosophy, for hundreds of years has been peace. Even in the face of absolute disaster for them as a people, they held steadfast to this belief. Although they underwent many years of suffering and despair, Moriori are now reasserting themselves as the distinct and unique indigenous peoples of Rekohu (the Chatham Islands). School camps at Kopinga Marae offers schools and class groups from around New Zealand, and further afield the opportunity to immerse themseves in this truly unique cultural centre whilst exploring all of the fantastic attractions and activities that Rekohu has to offer.

School Camps at Kopinga Marae as well as several other tourism activities, including the renowned Henga Lodge, are operated by Hokotehi Moriori Trust. Henga Lodge can also be used to compliment School Camps at Kopinga Marae. Some adults may choose to stay there, rather than participating in the Marae experience. Providing that School groups maintain their own Adult-student ratios at the marae, this is a good way for additional parents to attend school camp, but still having the autonomy to go exploring independently. Henga Lodge is fast becoming the choice of destinations for visitors to Rekohu, so if you are thinking of pursuing this option, do it now! Bookings are essential at Henga Lodge. It really is the experience of Rekohu that school groups come here for.

Staying at Kopinga Marae is an awesome experience in itself, but when the students see the sights of Rekohu, they are captivated by it all. There are so many activites for them to do, that most school groups promise to return, because they cannot fit it all in, in just one week.

Hokotehi Moriori Trust, is the elected corporate body mandated to represent the Moriori people. Moriori are resident throughout these islands of Rekohu, the mainland of New Zealand, and around the globe.

Dont be fooled by the myths that you may have heard when you were at school. Moriori are very much a people. They are not Maori, they are Moriori!
